Kitchen Remodel in San Antonio: What to Expect and How to Budget

A kitchen remodel is one of the best investments a San Antonio homeowner can make. Updated kitchens sell faster, add serious resale value, and — most importantly — make daily life a whole lot better. But if you've never been through a remodel before, the process can feel overwhelming.

I'm Roy De Luna, owner of MR. ROY LLC, and I've done dozens of kitchen remodels across San Antonio, from quick refreshes to full gut jobs. Here's what you actually need to know before you start.

How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in San Antonio?

The honest answer: it depends on what you're doing. Here's a general breakdown for the San Antonio market:

  • Minor refresh (new hardware, paint, backsplash, fixtures): $2,500 – $6,000
  • Mid-range remodel (new cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring): $15,000 – $35,000
  • Full gut remodel (everything including layout changes, plumbing, electrical): $35,000 – $75,000+

San Antonio's cost of living keeps labor rates more reasonable than Austin or Dallas — that's good news for you. But materials like quartz countertops, custom cabinetry, and tile have gone up nationwide, so budget conservatively.

The Remodel Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Design & Planning (1–2 Weeks)

Before anyone picks up a hammer, we sit down and go over your goals, must-haves, and budget. We look at the existing layout, talk about what's staying and what's going, and put together a detailed scope of work. Skipping this step is the #1 reason remodels go over budget.

Step 2: Demo (1–3 Days)

Out with the old. Cabinets, countertops, flooring, and sometimes walls come down. This is always faster than people expect and more satisfying than they imagined.

Step 3: Rough-In Work (1–2 Weeks)

If you're moving the sink, adding an island, or upgrading your electrical panel for a new range, this is when plumbers and electricians do their thing. This is also when permits are pulled — and yes, we always pull permits. It protects you when you sell.

Step 4: Cabinets & Countertops (1–2 Weeks)

Cabinets go in first, then countertops are templated and fabricated. Quartz is our most popular choice in San Antonio — it holds up to heat and humidity without the maintenance of natural stone.

Step 5: Tile, Flooring & Fixtures (1 Week)

Backsplash tile, new flooring (we love LVP in kitchens — water-resistant and durable), and all fixtures get installed.

Step 6: Final Touches & Walkthrough

Appliances go in, trim is painted, and we do a complete walkthrough with you before we call it done.

Tips to Keep Your Remodel on Budget

  • Don't move the sink if you can avoid it. Plumbing changes add $1,500–$3,000 fast.
  • Stock or semi-custom cabinets look just as good as custom and cost 40–60% less.
  • Buy appliances during holiday sales (Labor Day, Black Friday) for serious discounts.
  • Get everything in writing. A detailed contract protects you from scope creep and surprises.
