Deck patio outdoor living San Antonio TX MrRoyLLC

Deck vs. Patio vs. Concrete Slab — What's Best for San Antonio Backyards?

San Antonio weather is built for outdoor living — but choosing the right outdoor structure makes all the difference. Roy De Luna of MrRoyLLC has built hundreds of decks, patios, and outdoor spaces across Bexar County. Here's how to choose.

Wood and Composite Decks

Best for: Elevated homes, back doors that sit above grade, homeowners who want a natural look.

Cost: $15–$35 per square foot installed. A 400 sq ft deck runs $6,000–$14,000 depending on material (pressure-treated wood vs. composite).

San Antonio consideration: Wood decks require annual sealing in San Antonio's heat. Composite decks (Trex, TimberTech) are low-maintenance and hold up better in our climate.

Stamped Concrete Patio

Best for: Ground-level outdoor spaces, pool surrounds, covered patio extensions.

Cost: $8–$18 per square foot. A 500 sq ft stamped patio runs $4,000–$9,000.

San Antonio consideration: Concrete can crack in our clay soil. Proper base prep (6-inch caliche base, rebar, expansion joints) is critical. Don't let anyone skip this step.

Covered Patio / Outdoor Room

Best for: Families who want year-round usable outdoor space. San Antonio's weather lets you use a covered patio 10+ months a year.

Cost: $15,000–$40,000 depending on size, roofing style, and whether you add electrical/ceiling fans/outdoor kitchen.

What We Recommend

For most San Antonio homeowners: a concrete patio with a covered pergola or solid roof extension. It maximizes usable square footage, adds to the home's value, and handles our climate better than exposed wood.
